William "Sonny" Hughes was born on September 19, 1936 at Darnell, LA . He went to be with his Lord on Friday December 23, 2011 at his residence following an extended illness. Funeral services will be held at Bosco Baptist Church on Blankston Road, Monroe, LA on Tuesday December 27, 2011 at 2pm with the Rev. Bruce Underwood officiating. Interment will follow in the Bosco Cemetery under direction of Riser Funeral Home of Columbia. Visitation will be on Monday evening at the church from 4pm until 9pm. Sonny was known for his green thumb. He was a "jack of all trades" including: gardening, carpenter, mechanic, and heavy equipment operator. He served in the United States Army from 1953 to 1956. He loved all activities concerning nature and animals. He had a special love for children. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Sylvester and Annie Varner Hughes, two sisters, Hazel Aline Guillory, Johnny May Sellars; brother, Buck Melvin Hughes; his father and mother-in-law, Frank Sr. and Sadie Smith; two sisters in law, Ethel Hilburn and Patricia Johnson, two brothers-in-law, Frank and Talmadge Brock. He is survived by his wife of fifty-three years, Marjorie Evelyn Smith Hughes; three sons: William Russell, Franklin Earl, both from Bosco, and Anthony Wayne and wife Wendy Ann Hughes of Covington, an adopted son, Phillip and wife, Brandy Oliveaux of Columbia. He is also survived by three sisters: Lucille Brock from Terry, MS, Jewel Brock of Raymond,MS; and Bobbie Mae Stanley and husband Roger from Zachary; a brother, Sylvester (Buddy) Hughes and wife Mildred from Lake Providence. He is loved and missed by many aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews, and many other friends and loved ones.
