Wenonah Lafferty

Funeral services for Wenonah E. Lafferty will be held at 10AM, Friday, January 29, 2016 at the First United Methodist Church, Columbia, Louisiana with Bro. Stephen Fife and Jerry Mobley officiating. Interment will be at Welcome Home Cemetery, Grayson, Louisiana. Visitation will be Thursday, January 28, 2016 at the church from 5PM until 9:30PM. Wenonah Beatrice Eden Lafferty entered this world July 23, 1914 and departed this world January 25, 2016. She was born in Hugoton, Kansas to James and Ina Eden. She married the love of her life, J. Marvin Lafferty on September 6, 1931. They had two children, James Marvin "Lefty" Lafferty and Marva Lee Gregory and seven grandchildren. Mrs. Lafferty was preceded in death by her husband of 38 years, J. Marvin Lafferty, her grandson, Jessie Marvin Lafferty, and her great-grandson, Jacob Lafferty. She is survived by her son, J. M. "Lefty" Lafferty and wife, Judi; her daughter, Marva Lee Gregory; her grandchildren: Vicky Seyford (Gary), Leslie Carloss, David Gregory (Denise), Steve Gregory (Sarah), Michawn Thirion (Michael), and Michelle Gregory; ten great-grandchildren, nine great-great-grandchildren, two great-great-great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She will be sorely missed by her Friday afternoon coffee group, her fellow Chicken Foot players, and her special friend, Faye Copeland. Special thanks go to Denise Gregory for the many hours of loving care she gave to our mother in her time of need. Thanks to all her doctors, especially Dr. Schroff. Serving as pallbearers will be Steve May, Charlie Rowland, Ronnie Darden, Bob Meredith, Scott Meredith, and Jerry Mobley. Honorary pallbearers will be J.B. Rowland, James Stewart, Binus Duke, Dennis Rowland, Chris Clewitt, Frank Boudreaux, Alvin Bellaire, Jack Patin, Shawn Thirion and James Mixon. She had two other loves in her life besides her family. One was her church, First United Methodist Church, where she was a member for over 70 years. She sang in the choir for over 50 years and was a woman of strong Christian faith, always putting God first. Her other love was her Eastern Star work. She was a member of the Columbia Order of Eastern Star #147 for over 72 years. During that time she held many offices including all stations up to the Worthy Matron. She held several state offices and was Grand Chaplain for the state of Louisiana. Not someone to be idle, after her husband died, she was the first woman insurance salesman for Farm Bureau Insurance and she worked at Corey Gin. She worked at Brunson Tax Service for over 30 years and in 1998, before her retirement at age 90, she was awarded a plaque for the oldest worker. She was celebrated as the oldest cancer survivor and was a former Columbia Lions Club Honorary Queen. She was honored to be the Grand Marshall in the Columbia Christmas Parade. Wenonah loved to travel and she never met a stranger. She visited every state including Hawaii and always said the only place she hadn't been was Australia. In lieu of flowers, donation may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Columbia or Order of the Eastern Star #147.
