Velma Ruth Johns Nelson

Funeral services for Velma Ruth Nelson, 72 from  Columbia, LA will be held at 2:00 PM, Wednesday, March 16, 2022, at Riser & Son Funeral Home chapel in Columbia, LA. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on March 15, 2022, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Interment will follow in the Beouf River Worship Center Cemetery at Woolen Lake, Hebert, LA.

Velma Nelson was born April 20, 1949, to Hilton Leo Johns and Mary Levearn Johns, the second daughter of five children. She passed away on March 11, 2022, at her home on Woolen Lake where she had retired to and enjoyed fishing and sitting outside by the lake. She was a retiree of Ouachita Parish School Systems where she served as a Cafateria Manager for numerous schools including Calhoun Middle School, Calhoun High School, and Kiroli Elementary School. 

She is preceded in death by her husband, Ronald Nelson and mother, Mary Levearn Johns. 

She is survived by her children: son Jeffery Shavers and spouse Vicki Shavers, and daughter Carmen Cox and spouse Casey Cox.  She has four loving grandchildren: Justin Shavers, Katchrina Shavers, Cailey Cox, and Colton Cox.  Her other surviving family members include her father, Leo Johns and siblings: Mary Ann Meek, Leola Quimby, Hilton Leo Johns, Jr. and Charlene Hibbard.

Serving as pallbearers will be Marcus Johns, Justin Shavers, Nick Carlson, Caleb Hibbard, and Casey Cox.
