Ruth Helen Gough McDaniel Funeral services for Mrs. Helen McDaniel, age 98, formerly of Kelly, LA will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday, January 15, 2011 at Riser Funeral Home in Columbia, LA with Marilyn Glover presenting the eulogy and Rev. Betsy Honeycutt officiating. Interment will follow immediately after the service at Adams Cemetery in Kelly, LA. A special time of sharing and visitation will follow the interment at Maple Hill Smoke House on Highway 165 South. Visitation will be Friday evening at Riser Funeral Home in Columbia from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM and the doors will be open Saturday morning from 8 AM until time of service. During her life, Mrs. Helen was primarily a home maker, but also spent time working as a service station proprietor, store clerk, nurse's assistant, book keeper, and substitute teacher at Kelly School. She was a member of Kelly Baptist Church where she served as a Sunday school teacher, choir director, and vacation Bible school teacher. Upon moving, she affiliated with the First Baptist Church of Calhoun. She enjoyed quilting, crocheting, gardening, fishing, and squirrel hunting. Later in life she came to enjoy 4-wheeler riding with her oldest great-granddaughter, coloring with her younger great-granddaughters, and admiring and watching them play. Mrs. McDaniel was an avid basketball fan who treasured her times supporting the Lady Techsters! She was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband; William Troy McDaniel, and her special aunts, Susan Pentecost and Nina Hargrove who she cherished as sisters. She follows first cousins raised as siblings: Bruce Gough, Woodrow Gough, Aswell Gough, and Red Randall. Survivors include her daughter, Patricia Childress and husband, Carl of Calhoun, LA; one grandson: Barry Bush and wife, Kay of Jennings, LA; two granddaughters: Shelly Mays Malone and husband, Justin of Haughton, LA and Dr. Samantha Mays Theimann and husband, Jody of Shreveport, LA; five great-granddaughters, Caitlyn Bush, Tatum Malone, Keagan Malone, Ryann Theimann, and Taylor Theimann, as well as a host of adopted family and friends. Pallbearers will be Barry Bush, Justin Malone, Jody Thiemann, Doug Crawford, Joey Crawford, and Billy Joe Powell. Honorary pallbearers are Gerald Childress, Kenneth Childress, Ronnie Gough, and Ronnie Laird. Our family wishes to thank the staff at the West Monroe Guest House and Hospice Compassus for the love they have continually shown for Mrs. Helen. Your diligence in caring for our loved one is so greatly appreciated. In lieu of flowers, our family requests that you please make a donation to the Kelly Baptist Church, St. Jude Research Hospital, the Jake Owen Raborn Foundation, or to the charity of your choice.
