Rev. A.B. Masters, Jr.
Rev. Allen Benjamin (A.B.) Masters, Jr. was born September 16, 1934, in Jonesville, LA to the union of his parents, Rev. A.B. and Susie Morris Masters. He passed from this life Tuesday, September 19, 2023, at his home following an extended illness.
A.B. began working at the young age of 14, eventually settling on a career in the oil drilling industry. He began as a roustabout and rose through the ranks until retiring as a Directional Driller. After his retirement, A.B. became an auxiliary deputy with the Caldwell Parish Sheriff’s Department. This led to a second occupation as a law enforcement officer. He worked as a bailiff in the courtroom of District Judge Don Burns, and for a short time, served as the maintenance coordinator for the Caldwell Parish Courthouse. In addition to his employment, he served, as a volunteer for various community organizations. He was a member of the Board of Trustees, as well as an ardent supporter of the Columbia Heights Fire Department.
Throughout his adult life, A.B. was an ordained minister. He served in various ministerial capacities, the highlight of which, was the eight years spent as Pastor of the Grayson Pentecostal Church. Here, he followed in the footsteps of his Father who had been pastor of the church for over 40 years! During his years in ministry and as a Christian in the community, he touched countless lives with his wit, humor, and larger than life personality! Later in his life, he devoted his time and efforts to his hobbies: deer hunting, cooking, and music at “The Pickin’ Shed”!
A.B. loved his large family with his whole heart. He was especially proud to be the patriarch of 5 generations! Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 72 years, Geneva Stump Masters of Columbia; three sons (all of Columbia): David Masters (Ronna), Terry Masters (Pam Cruse), and Donald Masters (Pam Hamm); one daughter, Janice Guerrero (Danny); and one brother, Odis F. Masters. He was blessed with 12 Grandchildren, 26 Great Grandchildren, and 3 Great Great Grandchildren. He had a host of nieces and nephews and a multitude of friends and other family members. He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers: Johnny Masters, James S. Masters, and W.L. Masters; one sister, Flora Bell McCarthy; one grandson, Benjy Masters; and one great-granddaughter, Tristan Guerrero.
All services will be held at the Holum Baptist Church on Hwy. 126 E. outside of Grayson. There will be a visitation on Friday, September 22, 2023, from 5-8 p.m. The funeral will be held at 10 AM, Saturday, September 23, 2023, with Rev. Tommy Prince, Rev. Bobby McGuire, and Rev. Jeff Masters officiating. Interment will follow at Welcome Home Cemetery in Grayson, LA. Pallbearers will be grandsons: Keith Guerrero, Kendall Guerrero, Alan Masters, Joe Sutherlin, Toby Sutherlin, Jason Vallery, Jeb Baker, Ryan Wallace, Reed Anderson, Nick Page, Cason Pyles, Parker Carlino, Bryson Page, Peter Page, and Hunter Rowland. Honorary pallbearers will be the men of Holum Baptist Church and the men of “The Pickin’ Shed”.
