Funeral services for John F. "Mutt" Roberts, age 89 of Urania formerly of Delhi, will be held at 1 PM Wednesday, September 11, 2013 from the sanctuary of Urania First Baptist Church in Urania, LA with Bro. Bo Prather and Ron Skinner officiating. Interment will follow at Urania Cemetery in Urania.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 10, 2013 at Urania First Baptist Church from 5 PM to 8 PM then again Wednesday morning from 10 AM until time of services.
Mr. Roberts was born on December 27, 1923, but due to being snowed in on the mountainside it was not registered until January 27, 1924 in Mount Gilead, NC. He went to his Heavenly home on Saturday, September 7, 2013 at Hardtner Medical Center in Urania. During WWII he served with the US Army as a communications chief. John, affectionately known as "Mutt" to all his family and friends was an avid white perch fisherman and gardener. He was an original member of the "Urania Knotheads" men's group. He served as Deacon at his church, Urania First Baptist Church and was a member of the Senior Men's Sunday school class.
John was raised in Alto, LA and graduated in 1943 from Mangham High School. He lived and worked for many years in Delhi where he was employed with United Gas Pipeline as a crew foreman. His company moved him and family to Urania in 1973 where he later retired.
J. F. "Mutt" was a man who loved truly and deeply and was loved by all who knew him. He was a pillar in his community was passionate about his church and town.
He was preceded in death by his father, Gene Roberts; mother, Lola Maynor Roberts Spells; step-father, Robert Spells; brother, Carson Eugene Roberts; and four sisters: Mattie Lee Hines, Agatha Smiddy, Elvie McIntyre and Julia Ann Adcock.
Those left to cherish his memory is his beloved wife of 62 years, Dorothy Trippe Roberts; two daughters: Catherine Denise Cross and husband, Douglas Wayne and Donna Jean Eubanks and husband, Johnny Keith both of Pineville; four grandchildren: Amanda Nicole Cross, John Douglas Cross, Justin Kyle Eubanks and fiance', Jessica Parker and Hunter Cole Eubanks; three great-grandchildren: Braden Anthony Orgeron, Madelyn Grace Orgeron and Kinsley Rae Eubanks; special friends: Terri Corley, Pam Banes Sullivan, Sandy Callender, Janet Edwards, Dr. K.P. Mauterer and lifelong friend and fishing buddy, W.B. "Dub" Sumner and numerous other friends, nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Justin Eubanks, John Cross, David Bryant and Wayne Corley, Kevin Daughtery, and Ben Wilson. Honorary pallbearers will be Mike Corley, Danny Maynor, Kenny Maynor, W.B. "Dub" Sumner, Urania Baptist Church Men's Sunday School Class and the Urania "Knotheads".
