Funeral services for Jack Benjamin Key age 88 of Columbia will be held 10:00 am Thursday January 22, 2015 from the sanctuary of First Baptist Church of Columbia with Rev. Eric Harriman officiating. Interment will follow in the Columbia Hill Cemetery under direction of Riser Funeral Home of Columbia. Visitation will be on Wednesday January 21, 2015 at the church from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm. Jack Benjamin Key was born in Many, Louisiana on June 8, 1926 and passed from this life on January 17, 2015 in Columbia. He was preceded in death by his father, Joe Dexon Key, his mother Jessie Finlay Key and a brother Andrew Finlay Key. His older brother J.D. had died when J.D. Was five years old. Jack is survived by his wife of 69 years, Violet Simpson Key, a daughter Joyce Key Robinson and a son Joe Finlay Key. He also had eleven grandchildren, twenty eight great-grandchildren, and ten great-great-grandchildren. He was much loved , and will be sorely missed by all of them. Jack Key answered his country's call to arms and served honorably in the Unites States Navy during World War II. As a a matter of fact, he lied about his age and joined up when he was only sixteen. He once told me he sailed not seven seas but ten seas. He went to work for Texas Gas Transmission Corporation and thirty-five years later retired there. Jack was a true son of Louisiana. He liked rice, politics, hot summers and friends. He hated hypocrites, back stabbers and the music of Hank Williams, Jr. He was the best friend you could ever want. He was one of the last of a vanishing breed. Above all, Jack Key was an American. He loved this country more than his life. He proved it by laying his life on the line defending his country. When he thought something had harmed this country, he would say that he felt physical pain over it. Jack Key was no angel, he was a man. He had his faults. He was tight with a dollar, slow to forgive an insult and would stand by a friend- even when he knew his friend was wrong. But as a man, he was unequaled. He was truly strong, brave, faithful and loving. Pallbearers include Andrew Key, Jack Robinson, Daniel Robinson, Morgan Warner, Jacob Robinson, Justin Roberts, Jordan Roberts, Jonathan Estep, and Jeremy Brown. Honorary pallbearers include Jackson Warner, Trip and Tanner Meredith, Joshua Robinson, Henry Dupont, Jacob Dupont, Zach Brown, and Jude Thomas.
