Funeral services for Edith Godfrey LeVasseur, 97 of Monroe and formerly of Columbia will be held 11:00 am Saturday, October 3, 2015 from the sanctuary of First United Methodist Church in Columbia with Rev. J. Roddy Taylor officiating. Interment will follow in the Columbia Hill Cemetery under direction of Riser Funeral Home of Columbia. Visitation will be at the church on Saturday from 10:00 am until time of service. Mrs. LeVasseur was born at Bastrop,Louisiana on December 20, 1917 and passed away peacefully at her residence in Monroe on Sunday September 27, 2015. She was preceded in death by her parents William Poland Stotts and Lottie Amelia Hendrick Stotts, her two husbands: Cicero Godfrey and Kellie LeVasseur, and her daughter Kay Godfrey Ellender. She along with Mr. Godfrey owned and operated Godfrey's Dry Goods in downtown Columbia for many years. She served on the State Library Board, the Louisiana State Archives Commission, and the Caldwell Parish Library board for some twenty years. She was also on the Caldwell Parish Board of Mental Health and served with ARC in Pensacola, Florida. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Columbia. Edith was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She will be missed greatly by all who knew her.
Left to cherish her memory is her daughter: Anne Godfrey Erskine and husband David G. Erskine of Monroe; three grandchildren: Willard A. Ellender, III (Sandy) of Ann Arbor, Michigan, George Randolph Erskine(Susan) of Aliso Viejo, CA, and David Graves Erskine (Sherri) of Georgetown, Texas ; and seven great-grandchildren.
Serving as pallbearers will be Hugh Cameron Murray, John Carroll, Clay Bennett, Pete Adams, Leslie LaCroix, William J. Hardy and John Holliday. Honorary pallbearers include Johnny James and Dr. E.D. Coates.
In lieu of flowers any planned memorials may be made to any library or the Columbia Hill Cemetery, P.O. Box 1301, Columbia, Louisiana 71418.
The family sends special thanks to Dr. Bob Raulerson and his staff for their compassionate care and concern. They gratfully acknowledge and appreciate the loving care, attention, and devotion provided by two special people, Marjorie Ausberry and Hattie Glenn.
