Funeral services for Mr. Clifton Winton Burns, age 90 of Grayson, will be held at 2 PM Friday, September 3, 2010 from the chapel of Riser Funeral Home in Columbia with Rev. Chris Wilbur officiating and Wes Burns delivering the eulogy with Lori McCarty as the soloist. Interment will follow at Mt. Rose Cemetery in Grayson. Visitation will be Thursday evening at the Columbia funeral home from 5 PM to 8 PM. The funeral home doors will be open at 8 AM on Friday until time of service. Mr. Burns was born in Roston, AR on October 18, 1919 to the union of John Thomas and Cary Steed Burns and went to be with his Lord on Thursday, September 2, 2010 at Citizens Medical Center in Columbia. Clifton was a retired Major with the US Air Force having served in WWII and Korea. He flew a total of 26 missions with 2 on D-Day. He was an educator having taught school and been the second principal of Caldwell Parish High School. He held many other positions including serving on the Dugdemona Soil & Water Conservation District, lifelong member of the Columbia Lions Club, longtime teacher of the adult Sunday school class at Grayson United Methodist Church, was a Mason and enjoyed raising cattle. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife; Marie Richardson Burns and two sisters: Lillian Russell and Dorothy Fuller. Survivors include his son; Judge Don C. Burns and wife, Mary, daughter; Anne Burns, grandson; Thomas Wesley "Wes" Burns and fiance' Tonya Guyton and three great-grandchildren: Cody James "Tick" McElroy, Amber McKenzie Burns and Hannah Guyton. Pallbearers will be Sam Carroll, Cody "Tick" McElroy, Lane Dale, Wayne Barnett, John Barnett and Steve Richardson. Honorary pallbearers will be Buddy Gill, Harmon Wyles, John Robinson, Howard Strebeck, Curtis Richardson, Bill Chappell and John Patterson.
