Funeral services for Alvin J. Berry, age 88 of Grayson will be held at 2:00 PM, Wednesday, July 24, 2024, from the sanctuary of Columbia Heights Baptist Church with the Rev. Warren Maxwell officiating. Interment with full Military Honors will follow in the Cross Roads Cemetery at Grayson under direction of Riser & Son Funeral Home of Columbia. The Berry family will receive visitors on Tuesday, July 23, 2024, at the church from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
Alvin Jeffery Berry was born on May 20,1936, in Grayson, Louisiana to the union of his parents, Johnny Jefferson Berry and Juanita Dupree Berry. He passed to his heavenly home on July 20, 2024, at his residence, surrounded by family. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Lester Berry and Chester Berry; sisters, Marty Bradford, Evelyn Gunn, and Bobbie Gunn.
He attended Grayson High School and then joined the United States Marine Corps in 1953. Following his 3-year tour in the Marines, he then joined the United States Air Force. Alvin received the Airman of the Month award his first month at Randolph AFB, San Antonio, Texas, a testament to his career in the USAF. He continued his faithful military service for 20 years, retiring as a Technical Sergeant (TSgt) in 1972. Alvin dutifully served his country in the Korean War as well as, multiple tours in the Vietnam War. Following his retirement he worked for Lowes Oil as a shop supervisor for over 15 years.
Alvin married the love of his life, Evelyn Stamper, in 1956 after a divine meeting at church. It was a story he loved to tell, even at the very end, knowing in his heart they were soulmates destined by God. He was a loving son, brother, husband, father, papaw, uncle, and friend. His hobbies included tinkering with machinery, working-on and rebuilding vehicles, and loving-on his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 67 years, Evelyn Stamper Berry; son, Reginald Glen Berry (Gloria); daughter, Cynthia Berry Copeland (Ricky); daughter, Jill Berry Guerrero (Richie); grandchildren: Ashley Copeland Moos (Dan); Scott Copeland (Brittany); Tyler Guerrero (Magen); Olivia Guerrero; Blake Guerrero; great-grandchildren: Daegen, Dyson, and Daxton Moos, Rielly and Kinleigh Copeland, Grayson and Evelyn Guerrero; sisters: Dottie Masoner, Daisy Black, and Charlene Nutt; sisters-in-law: Bonnie Stamper White, Joyce Washer; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and many friends.
Pallbearers will be Dan Moos, Daegen Moos, Dyson Moos, Scott Copeland, Rielly Copeland, Tyler Guerrero, Blake Guerrero, Gaylon Head and Clint May. Honorary pallbearer is Greg Black.
